Guwahati, 18th Oct: In a major political development ahead of next year’s Assam Assembly elections, the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) has rejoined the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
BPF leader Charan Boro was sworn in as a minister in Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s cabinet at the Raj Bhavan in Guwahati on Saturday. Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office in the presence of Chief Minister Sarma, Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) chief Hagrama Mohilary, and senior cabinet members.
Welcoming the BPF back into the NDA fold, Chief Minister Sarma said, “I had told you all when BPF won the Bodoland Territorial Council elections that we would welcome them to the NDA. Today, the inclusion of BPF’s Charan Boro as a minister in the NDA government is a milestone for peace in Bodoland.”
He expressed gratitude to Hagrama Mohilary for supporting the move, saying, “Our aim is to work together to bring lasting peace and progress to all communities living in Bodoland.”
Charan Boro, who has been allotted the Transport portfolio, called the BPF’s return to the NDA a “great moment” for the people of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). “I am grateful to be entrusted with this responsibility. We have full faith in the government and in the people of the BTC,” Boro said.
BPF chief Hagrama Mohilary, who had severed ties with the NDA in 2021, said his party would now focus on people-centric development. “BPF has always worked for the welfare of the people in BTC. Development must be done in coordination with the government. We will work together with the NDA to address the challenges of the region,” he stated.
Political observers view the BPF’s return as a strategic boost for the NDA in Assam’s Bodoland region, where the party retains a strong grassroots base.
