New Delhi, 11th Nov: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has officially taken over the probe into the deadly blast near Delhi’s Red Fort that killed nine people and injured more than 20 others on Monday evening. The development comes as investigators detained three doctors from Faridabad’s Al-Falah University—identified as Muzammil Shakeel, Umar Mohammed, and Shaheen Shahid—for their alleged links to terrorist activities.
Early this morning, a team from the Delhi Police Crime Branch reached the Al-Falah University campus to question staff and examine CCTV footage. The officers were seen collecting records related to the three detained doctors, who were reportedly working at a Faridabad hospital affiliated with the university.
According to officials, Muzammil Shakeel, originally from Kashmir, became a key suspect after investigators recovered around 2,900 kg of explosive material from two rooms he had rented in Faridabad. The recovery also included bomb-making components, chemical substances, and documents indicating possible links to extremist organisations.
Sources said that Muzammil stayed on the Al-Falah University campus but rented two rooms elsewhere for what he described as “research purposes.” Alongside the explosives, police also recovered assault rifles and ammunition from a car belonging to another doctor, Shaheen Shahid, who, investigators allege, headed the Indian branch of Jaish-e-Mohammed’s women’s wing, Jamaat ul-Mominaat, a faction reportedly led by Jaish founder Masood Azhar’s sister, Sadia Azhar.
Shortly after these seizures and the reports of a foiled terror plot, the blast near Red Fort occurred, triggering nationwide alarm. Investigators are now probing whether the explosion was a suicide attack carried out by Umar Mohammed, another doctor from Kashmir and a close associate of Muzammil. Preliminary reports suggest Umar might have been driving the Hyundai i20 that exploded near the Subhash Marg traffic signal, close to the Red Fort.
A senior security official told GG News Bureau, “The timing of the blast, just hours after the Faridabad raid, suggests a desperate attempt to carry out an attack. All leads point to a connected network, and NIA is now examining possible coordination between these individuals and transnational terror groups.”
Following the incident, Home Minister Amit Shah has called for a high-level meeting involving top officials from the Intelligence Bureau (IB), Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), and Delhi Police. Shah earlier assured that the government would “leave no stone unturned” in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
The NIA team has sealed multiple premises in Faridabad and Delhi as part of the ongoing investigation. Meanwhile, a forensic team from the National Security Guard (NSG) is analysing samples from the blast site to confirm the nature of explosives used.
Security across Delhi, Mumbai, and Uttar Pradesh remains on high alert, with intelligence agencies now focusing on potential sleeper cells operating in northern India.
