New Delhi, 23rd Feb. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) took a decisive step on Friday amid ongoing Sandeshkhali controversy in West Bengal by registering a case against Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan on charges of money laundering. Raids are currently underway at Shahjahan’s residence and six other locations linked to him.
The accusations against Shahjahan stem from allegations of land-grabbing activities and sexual assault, reportedly carried out through coercive tactics, as voiced by women in Sandeshkhali. Shahjahan has been on the run from law enforcement ever since a mob, believed to be connected to him, attacked ED officials during a search operation related to a ration scam on January 5. This incident not only escalated tensions but also highlighted Shahjahan’s considerable influence and power in the region.
In response to mounting pressure, the state police have intensified efforts, resulting in the arrest of Shahjahan’s associates, Shibu Hazra and Uttam Sardar, although Shahjahan himself remains elusive. With 17 arrests made thus far, the police are urging villagers to come forward with their complaints, organizing outreach programs to address issues concerning land acquisition and extortion. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress of shielding Shahjahan.
In a countermove, the Trinamool Congress accused the ED of instigating the local populace. Consequently, the Ministry of Home Affairs has asked a comprehensive report from the West Bengal government regarding the attacks. These latest raids form part of a broader investigation into an alleged ration scam in the state, with former food and civil supplies minister Jyotipriya Mallick already in custody since October 2023.
Responding to the escalating tensions, the Calcutta High Court has directed the formation of a collaborative Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and West Bengal Police to probe the assault on ED officials in Sandeshkhali.
