Bengaluru, 10th Feb. In a scathing attack on Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah lambasted the Centre for its failure to release crucial funds earmarked for the state’s development projects.
The chief minister, expressing deep concern over the delayed allocation of funds, highlighted two major issues that have sparked controversy and dissatisfaction among Kannadigas.
Siddaramaiah emphasized the non-disbursement of ₹5,300 crore allocated for the Upper Bhadra project, a significant irrigation scheme vital for Karnataka’s agricultural sector. Despite assurances made by Sitharaman in her budget speech, stating the allocation would be released by March 2024, not a single rupee has been forthcoming, lamented the chief minister.
He underscored the urgency of these funds for the successful implementation of the project, which aims to address water scarcity challenges in the central region of the state.
Furthermore, Siddaramaiah criticized Sitharaman’s dismissal of the ₹11,495 crore special grants recommended by the 15th Finance Commission.
He condemned the rejection of these funds as a grave injustice to Karnataka, stressing the detrimental impact on the state’s development initiatives. Despite efforts by Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar to secure the release of funds, the state remains empty-handed, aggravating tensions between the Centre and Karnataka.
The chief minister highlighted the disproportionate distribution of tax revenues, where Karnataka receives a mere fraction of what it contributes to the central government.
Siddaramaiah underscored Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s previous stance advocating for direct tax collection from states, contrasting it with the current narrative accusing Karnataka of divisive actions.
He called upon the people of Karnataka to demand accountability from the Centre, expressing disappointment over unfulfilled promises made by the BJP-led government.
